Elegant Halloween Weddings

By Tonia Jordan There is a growing trend of weddings occurring on Halloween. This date offers a wide range of options for a wedding party, and though many may think a Halloween wedding must consist of gothic and spooky imagery, it is quite possible to hold a classic and traditional wedding on October 31st. Atmosphere is everything in a wedding. An elegant Halloween wedding can include glowing candles, fall colors and decorations, like pumpkins, leaves and gourds, or even simple yet romantic moonlight. Warm colors, like gold, oranges and browns reflect the colors of the season. Dead branches can be used along with ribbons or twinkling lights and artificial leaves in fall colors to create a perfect autumn environment. Candelabras can also create a simple and elegant effect. Some classic costume ideas for the wedding party would be an angel for the bride, or even just a sleek, slim-fitting dress. A Victorian style or a Morticia Adams style dress fits perfectly with the season, yet remains traditional and elegant. Decorate tables with dark cloth sprinkled with gold or orange confetti or artificial fall leaves. Goblet-themed place card holders add an elegant touch. Party favors can include fall-decorated votive or tapered candles, or even Halloween candies. Just adding wings to a bridal gown can also create an instant and beautiful costume. Bridesmaids can dress similarly to the bride. Ideas for costumes with wings include butterflies and moths. The groom and groomsmen can dress up in a cape and cane in addition to their dark tuxedo. A brides bouquet and flower arrangements for the wedding can easily incorporate flowers of the season or even just a mix of oranges, yellows and reds. Tiger Lilies or orange roses add an elegant touch. If you like gothic themes but want your wedding to remain classy, a Victorian style can be very elegant with its silver ornamentation and classic dress. Dark colors work well to create a classic Victorian style. Invited guests can be asked to dress in classy costumes, such as Vampire/Vampiress, classic movie stars, etc. Suggestions can be given on wedding invitations. The wedding reception is often less formal than the wedding ceremony and your choice in decoration and atmosphere for a reception can include a variety of Halloween-themed stylistic touches. Imitation statues of cherubs create an elegant yet slightly gothic environment. Music for a Halloween wedding reception can range from a stringed orchestral group to a DJ playing classic Halloween-themed songs. For a Victorian-style reception, think of a grand and lavish ball, complete with elaborate ornamentation, chandeliers, and ballroom dancing. Music performed by an orchestra or even a simple piano add a classic touch to a Victorian-style reception. A classic and elegant Halloween wedding is quite possible without using any gruesome imagery like skeletons, monsters and tombstones. One thing is certain no matter what your choice – Your elegant Halloween wedding will be an event for all to remember. Finding Quality Pictures of Dinosaurs

By Morgan Hamilton I have two children which even though are similar in age, are completely different when it comes to their areas of interest. My daughter who is in her teens is interested in fashion, guys, and dates. But her primary hobby is talking on the phone; she is doing it all the time. My son is ten years old and all he cares about are toys and things that crawl, smell and make funny noises. Not to mention that his favourite activity is trying to make my daughter’s life a living hell. This is why I got very surprised when one day both of them said they wanted to make a class project with pictures of dinosaurs. I could have expected such an idea popping up in my son’s head, but I was surprised that my daughter’s art class was concentrating on dinosaurs. My son found the idea of working together with his sister trying to discover pictures of dinosaurs brilliant, but she didn’t even want to hear about it. She highly disliked this project and she had no intention of making things worse by doing research about dinosaurs with her younger brother. I thought it would be funny and easy to help my children with their projects. After all, how hard could it be to find some pictures of dinosaurs? The interest in them has been huge since the motion pictures invaded our lives. Then I began researching and I was faced up to a great difficulty. There were way too many sources to sift through. There are pictures of dinosaurs suitable for classes, others in clip art and there were also such pictures including a multitude of facts – some showing fun facts, others deep analysis of the life and demise of dinosaurs. When I went through the information with my son he was eager to include it all in his project, though the information was far too much. However, on the contrary, my daughter disliked all the pictures and wanted to use the first one she saw, even though she thought it was stupid, because she just wanted to have her project done. Then we tried searching for pictures in the arts area and we found some which were breathtaking. Many artists have managed to capture the beauty of the dinosaurs, as well as the magic of their surroundings. We even came across pictures in water colors and in oils. My daughter especially liked the pictures of life size sculptures of dinosaurs. Working with me, both my children were able to make wonderful school projects. What’s most amazing is how different each project was, though they shared the same topic. Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning kids and teens. After Your Interview – What Must You Do Next?

By Roger Clark Other than actually landing the interview itself and living through it, waiting after the interview and wondering whether you will get a phone call or a rejection letter can be one of the most difficult aspects of searching for a job. What you do after the interview should actually start while you are still working the interview. Prior to leaving make sure that you have noted the name of the person or persons who interviewed you. This will come in handy later for a number of purposes. Also, do make sure that you shake hands once again with your interviewer and thank them for taking the time to meet with you. Also, its not out of line to ask when they expect to be making a decision. This gives you a timeline to go by. Always be sure to send a thank-you letter. This practice not only demonstrates good social etiquette but it also helps to keep you and your skills fresh in the mind of the interviewer. On some occasions an interviewer already has an idea by the time the interviews are completed who they will be calling to offer the job; however on many more occasions they still remain unsure who will be awarded that coveted slot. Sometimes they want a little time to sleep on the decision or they may need to consult supervisors or others within their organization regarding the hiring decision. If a decision has not already been reached in the mind of the employer when all of the interviews have been completed, taking the time to send a thank-you letter can go a long way toward making sure you dont get lost in the shuffle. While its a good idea to send a polite thank you note to the person who interviewed you it is not a good idea to pester that person to no end. The only result you are likely to achieve through this strategy is alienating yourself from them and assuring that you wont get the job. Although dont take no for an answer is a strategy that many aggressive job coaches recommend; it is still always best to observe polite social standards. That is not to say that you should sit by the phone and allow several weeks to elapse, waiting, while you hear nothing and do nothing. Ideally, your thank you letter should have gone out the same day as the interview, no later than the following day. This means that the interviewer should receive it within one to two days following the initial interview. Keep track of when the employer indicated a decision would be made and if that time has come and gone, it is perfectly permissible to go ahead and phone them. However; when you do make the call, be polite. State your name, the date you interviewed and the position for which you interviewed. You may say that you are following up to inquire as to whether a decision has been made. At this point, the conversation can go a number of ways. The employer may indicate that a decision has been made and all candidates who were not selected will be receiving a letter in the mail. If this is the response you receive, it is your cue that you were not hired. Had you been, you would have received a phone call from the employer by now. Thank them for their times, ask them to keep you in mind for any future vacancies and get off the line. Dont burn any bridges. It could be that there was simply a better qualified candidate for that particular position, but they might consider you for a different, future position. On the other hand, the employer may state that they are still reviewing resume, conducting interviews, etc, etc. This type of response could mean a couple of different things. It could mean that they really have made a decision and the person just doesnt feel comfortable telling you on the phone that you werent selected or it could simply be taken at face value. Perhaps something came up and their initial timeline has been forced to be extended somewhat. In either case, always remain polite and thank them for their time. After you end the call, make a note of the date on your planner and set a tickler to remind yourself to call back in a week if you still havent heard anything. Call back once a week, every week until a decision is made. Once a week is persistent; a trait which is to be admired. Once a day is pesky; a trait that should be avoided at all costs. While it can be difficult to wait around after the interview, the most important two things that you should do is not blow the opportunity by annoying the employer with numerous pesky phone calls and by all means do not show up announced at their office door asking if they have arrived at a decision. Finally, make sure that you dont pin all your hopes on one job. Yes, it may have been your first choice and your ideal dream job; however; this is probably also true for someone else as well. Use the time while you are waiting to hear back from the employer to line up your B plan. Continue job searching, scheduling interviews and most importantly, reminding yourself that you can do this. How to Resign the Correct Way

By Corinne Dauncey Resigning from a job can be quite difficult for many people. You are leaving an environment where you have probably made friends to an environment where you will have to start again. There are right and wrong ways of resigning from your job. Doing things the wrong way may lead to negative feelings between you and your employer, which should be avoided, especially if you require a reference from them in the future. On the other hand, conforming to the correct etiquette of resigning can go a long way in ensuring continued success in both your personal and career development. At TipTopJob we would like to give you some practical advice on making resigning as painless and as easy as possible and to inform you of your rights and obligations to your employer and their responsibilities to you. Written Resignation To eliminate any possible misunderstanding, always submit your resignation in writing. Your typewritten letter should be brief but direct and to the point. It should contain a statement of resignation, an expression of thanks for the opportunity to work for the company, a final date of employment, and a co-operative statement expressing your willingness to help during the transition period prior to your last days of work. Oral Resignation Take some time to think about what you want to say before you tell them orally. It is always best to be polite and courteous even if you hate the person. During your resignation meeting, you should be prepared for any kind of reaction, maybe a congratulatory handshakes or even expressions of anger. Regardless of the reaction, you must remain calm, professional and positive. You have done nothing wrong! Why Are You Leaving? A potential trouble area is the inevitable question about why you’re leaving. It is not a good idea to unload your manager’s failings or the company’s problems. You will only leave behind a bad impression and it shows a lack of professionalism. Co-workers will also be curious about why you are leaving. You should tell them exactly what you told the company as anything you say may get back making your co-workers look loyal and you look like a liar. Finally Finally, give your very best effort right up until the last minute you’re there and do not underestimate the importance of your performance during your last days or weeks. It is a serious mistake to become mentally unemployed while working out your notice!! By using the strategies and techniques outlined above, you will resign with a high degree of professionalism without burning any bridges behind you. Your plan is to remain calm, courteous, positive and in control at all times. Sample Resignation Letter Dear (name of employer), I am writing to give you (notice period agreed in your contract) notice on my employment with (name of the company that you work for). I would like to thank you for the opportunity of working at (name of the company that you work for) which I have enjoyed. Please be assured that I will assist to the best of my abilities in the smooth transfer of my duties. I would like to wish you and (name of the company that you work for) continued success in the future. Learning in the Limelight at a Georgia Summer Camp

By Karen Safran You wont hear 12 year old movie directors mentioned at the Academy Awards yet. But given some time, these talented students just might make it big. Hundreds of 7-17 year olds applied their talents in a weeklong film production course at iD Tech Camps at a Georgia summer camp on the Emory University campus the past few summers. By the end of the week, each student team created inspiring movies with special effects using cutting-edge technology, including lighting kits and green screens from Photoflex, Canon camcorders, Apple Final Cut Pro editing software, and Adobe After Effects special effects software. With the skills they learn in one week, these up-and-coming student directors could be ready for an internship in the movie industry, said Kevin Painchaud, owner of an award-winning Hollywood-based movie production company and 7th year lead digital video instructor for iD Tech Camps . The equipment and software they use is exactly what my production company uses. What wonderful exposure to receive at such a young age. One of the things that makes many of their movies so powerful is their use of lighting and special effects to evoke mood, says Painchaud. With the use of the Photoflex professional lighting equipment, the students work was elevated to the next level. Students used the Photoflex FlexDrop green screen to superimpose backgrounds, including purely digital fabrications made from Adobe After Effects. With the Photoflex LiteDisc reflectors, students could also easily control the sunlight when filming outside. We learned a lot about cinematography and special effects, one student said. In one scene my crew and I used the green screen to add a ghostly figure that enters a room through a closed door to pursue the main character. While many Emory students were on location at the Emory campus in Georgia, another iD Tech student, Brittany, and her group filmed the short movie Subject #14 while attending the same program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. A chilling tale of descent into madness, Subject #14 won the programs nationwide competition for Best Drama. We created amazing lighting effects! Brittany said. It was really cool. We could make the actors look brighter or darker depending on what we wanted. These up-and-coming movie directors quickly discovered that this technique reduced shadows and created a diffused lighting effect. To open up the room and make it brighter, Brittanys crew adjusted a Photoflex Digital Lighting Kit so that its SilverDome softbox and Starlite light pointed toward the ceiling. By the end the weeklong course, the digital media students gain confidence and leadership skills. Many of them say they look forward to pursuing careers in the movie industry. Getting started in Hollywood may be a challenge, but with the experience these iD Tech Camp students have gained, their journey has already begun. Karen Thurm Safran writes for iD Tech Camps provides weeklong hands-on technology summer camps for boys and girls ages 7-17 at 40 prestigious universities nationwide. The summer camp in Georgia is located on the Emory University campus. At this day and overnight camp, students produce digital movies, create video games, design websites, learn programming & robotics, and more. It’s The Bridesmaids Turn – Let’s Have A Party!

By Lesley-Ann Graham Ever heard of a bridesmaids party? Most of you will probably say you’ve never heard of it. That’s ok but it is quite a common practice that most brides don’t realize there is a name for. No, it isn’t the same as the bridal shower. The bridesmaids party is a gathering called for by the bride exclusively for her bridesmaids. It doesn’t have to be a formal affair. A simple gathering for lunch or dinner and some time to chat is actually sufficient. This is the time for the bride to say thank you to these family members and friends who are playing a very active role in making the wedding happen the way the couple hopes. While it is an honor to be asked, some people do decline to be part of a wedding party. The bridesmaids rarely just sit around and do nothing but show up for the ceremony. Usually, they’ll be doing a whole lot of errand running for the bride and groom; hence the party in their behalf. This is normally set for a time when all the bridesmaids can be present – maybe for the final fitting of their dresses. When the fitting is done, whisk them off to the venue of your choice be it your home or a fancy restaurant. It’s best if you gave them warning to clear their schedules ahead of time. This is the time to discuss with them any particular tasks you want them to do for your wedding. This is also the time to say thank you for their help. If you have a gift for the bridesmaids, now is the time to give it as well. You can have this as late as the day before your wedding though, about a week or two before would be better. You’ll be done with the major details of your wedding and have time to relax and have fun with your friends. This time, it’s just for them. Lesley-Ann Graham runs WeddingTrix.com – a valuable wedding planning resource with articles, tips and advice to help you plan your perfect wedding.
